TV Remote Control Introduced 1956
Have you ever felt like you don't have the energy (though you really do) to change the channel on your TV manually? It's like you don't feel like getting up from that comfy spot on the couch. You would need a really good reason to get up and changing the channel, volume, or TV settings is not a good enough reason. Never fear, the TV remote control is here and will make sure you never have to get up unless for batteries for the remote. The year of 1956 this wonder was introduced to the U.S. and brought into homes. Old TV remote controls had many more buttons than the ones we use today and were had a wire connected to the TV so and was a problem because people constantly kept tripping on it so in a later model the cable was taken off and so the TV remote control became wireless. Talk about luxury.
Velcro Introduced 1956
Did you know that Velcro was an accidental invention? It was because a certain hiker went hiking with his dog one day and came back with burrs stuck on him and his dog's fur. Instead of taking them off he studied them with a microscope and found something amazing. Up close you can see that burrs have tiny hooks that latch on or fasten to certain types of materials. With this information that man began to experiment and the material that went best with the tiny hooks. It had a furry feeling and had tiny little hairs just like dog fur which made it easy to for the artificial man-made hooks to grasp on to. This later on led to the discovery of Velcro. It was introduced 1956 and people loved it. Instead of glue or ropes people had an easier way to fasten things that could come apart easily and was reusable, Velcro, a fastener used by millions today.
Laika Becomes the First Living Animal To Enter Space 1957
The Soviet Union and the U.S. were in a huge competition for space exploration and constantly wanted to explore and achieve certain accomplishments first. One of the greatest accomplished completed by the Soviet Union was to send the first living animal into space. Laika entered space honoring all her descendants 1957. Unfortunately there was no return plan for her and she died in space. Even if she did die, she died with honor. Laika was a stray dog and was probably never owned by anybody and might not have even known what was happening when she was chosen to go up into space. Today we recognize her as a brave and remarkable dog for not hesitating to go into space and risk her life.
LEGO Toy Bricks Are First Introduced 1958
In 1932 Ole Kirk Christiansen owned a store that sooner or later be the origins of LEGO toys. At first was a master carpenter in Denmark. Then, he established a store and was aided by his 12-year old son Godtfred Kirk Christiansen where he sold wooden toys, stepladders, and ironing boards. He named toy products LEGOs which meant in his language,"play well" and over the years he went from a few employees to 50. A few years later he thought of making plastic molds that children can play with which would then be the modern version of LEGOs in the U.S.. In 1958 LEGOs were first introduced to the U.S.. By then maybe every little kid wanted LEGOs.
NASA Founded 1958
NASA today is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration which helps people go up into space and get a closer look at what they have been missing out on. It is a program made during the,"Space Age" that trains astronauts how to act in space also it is a research division and their goal is to learn as much as they can about space. Astronauts also train when there are emergencies in space or problems so that they know how to solve them. NASA was founded the year of 1958 and during that year, the U.S. hoped it was the answer to beating the Soviet Union at the,"Space Race" and also to learn more about space and to actually experience being in space. That year, a program made for space exploration, discovery, and research was founded. NASA made a big impact on the world of today and if it had not been founded in 1958 we (or at least the U.S.) would know nothing different about space from what we knew back then and our communities would differ from what they are now.
Lasers Invented 1960
Lasers are such a great tool that people use today. Most people use it for laser hair removal and some people use it to light the way through a dense fog. Lasers are different from other light sources because they have characteristics that make a laser emit light coherently. Lasers at first were just called lasers because it was an acronym for Light Amplification and Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Lasers were invented the year of 1960 and made some things easier in the world such as removing hairs or finding your way in a fog. The invention of lasers really changed the world today and as this invention advances it will make the world even better.
The Most Powerful Earthquake Ever Recorded Hits Chile 1960
Earthquakes, which are unusual movements in the Earth are even a problem for people today. They are the effect of plates under the Earth moving and eventually creating so much seismic waves that would soon cause an earthquake. Earthquakes are measured with moments of magnitude and is the most common scale for earthquakes. Also seismographs are a common tool used to measure the power of earthquakes. The most powerful earthquake ever recorded by man happened on May 22, 1960 in Valdivia, Chile. It was rated as 9.5 for moments of magnitude where no other earthquake has reached and so people hope to never have a a earthquake as powerful as that one.
Walsh and Picard Become the First To Explore the Deepest Place On Earth 1960
The Marianas Trench is the deepest place on Earth and was discovered by Jacques Picard and Lieutenant Walsh on January 23, 1960. The Marianas Trench is the deepest place in the Pacific Ocean which is known to be the deepest ocean of all the seven. Also because it's the deepest it's also the the place with the most water pressure. Water Pressure is how much water is on top of you as you dive deeper into the ocean. The more water is on top of you the more deep into the ocean you are and the much more likely it is for you to get squished. In fact if a metal can was down there it would get crushed with all the water pressure on it. Which is one of the reasons why Walsh and Picard went down to the bottom of the Marianas Trench in a submarine that is harder to crush it and the people inside so that there is a better chance of a human getting down to the deepest part of the ocean and getting back up surviving.
